In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.

Wednesday’s papers in the UK covered the latest financial results from Old Trafford, Alex Ferguson welcomed back Bryan Robson and Paul Parker after a long injury absence, Ex Liverpool legend Tommy Smith defender Vinnie Jones over controversial video punishment and Liverpool manager heaped praise on club’s new joint record scorer Ian Rush.

Manchester United released its financial statements which showed an impressive performance by the club with regards to its finance. In the year to the end of July, the club made £5.05 million before tax compared to £5.37 million the previous year. Net transfer fees paid out were £2.62 million which was £800000 higher than the previous year. The chairman Sir Roland Smith said, “The reconstruction of the Stretford end was on schedule. The reconstruction would provide 2000 extra seats by the end of the year taking the stadium capacity to 43000.”

In an injury boost, Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was set to welcome Bryan Robson and Paul Parker back into the squad for the premier league matches post the international break. The duo had not played for the red devils for over six months and had to watch from the sidelines as United struggled to compete with Leeds on the later stages of the championship in the previous season. Ferguson confirmed that the duo’s first game back together was to be the match against Brighton in the Coca Cola cup which was tied at 1-1 after the first leg.

Ex Liverpool legend Tommy Smith came to the rescue of under pressure Vinnie Jones of Wimbledon after the later was in trouble over the controversial video “Football’s Hard Men” in which Jones was quoted saying that he used cheating and violence in football games to take advantage. Smith said that the matter was taken out of proportion and the FA had gone over the top with regards to the punishment given to Jones on the matter.

Liverpool manager Graeme Souness hailed club’s new generation and said that Ian Rush would be a big part of it. Rush had equaled club’s goal scoring record of 268 goals with Roger Hunt and Souness said that the 30-year-old could easily play for another three years at the top level and form a formidable partnership with young strikers at the club like Don Hutchison & Jamie Redknapp. Rush would next have an opportunity to become the sole leader at the top of Liverpool’s goal-scoring charts against arch-rivals Manchester United.
