In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.
Saturday papers in the UK covered the return of Ex-Manchester United boy Steven Pears as he was set to face his old club in the clash between Middlesborough & Manchester United, Chelsea continued their search for a new first-team goalkeeper and was set to offer CSKA Moscow man Dimitri Kharin a one week trial at Stamford Bridge, a fresh controversy sparked into life over the sacking of Phil Thompson by Liverpool manager Graeme Souness over his involvement with Manchester United manager and staff and top of the table Norwich City & Blackburn Rovers were set to clash with the financial disparity between the clubs in stark contrast.
Ex-Manchester United player Steven Pears was set to take his place between the sticks for Middlesborough against his former club. United went into that game on an eight-match unbeaten streak and despite Boro having a good record against United, Manager Larrie Lawrence acknowledged that getting a result against the Red Devils was going to be tough, “United are a good side with a good squad. If you start believing that they won’t be firing on all cylinders, you are dead.” The match is likely to attract the largest crowd at the Ayresome Park with a near sell-out 26000 crowds expected for the game.
Chelsea was set to bring CSKA Moscow Goal Keeper Dimitri Kharin on a one-week-long trial at the Stamford Bridge as they continued their search to find the replacement for out of favor goalkeeper Dave Beasant. Last week they had also given a trial to Polish International keeper Roman Szewcyck but Chelsea will continue to monitor him over the next few weeks as they close in on Kharin over a £50000 move. Chelsea manager Ian Porterfield said “We would like to take a close look at him and are working at bringing him over here to train with us.
Off the field, turmoil continued at Liverpool with the sacking of Phil Thompson being the latest reason for a fan split for and against the decision. Thompson who played for the Reds for 340 times and was the right-hand man for the previous manager Kenny Dalglish was kept on his job when then-new manager Graeme Souness took over the job. Despite his legendary status in the club both as a player and as support staff, he was sacked by Souness for allegedly talking to Alex Ferguson and his assistants at Manchester United about the issues at Liverpool which involved Souness. This incident took an ugly turn since the fan base was split at the time with some supporting Souness’ decision while others called him insecure in an increasingly tough job for him.
In the top of the table clash between then, leaders Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers who were two points behind the canneries at that point of time brought a unique debate over the way of achieving success in the premier league. Blackburn was led by their star man Alan Shearer who was paid more than the entire Norwich City squad. On paper, the match was a real David vs Goliath battle. Norwich City defender Chris Sutton acknowledged the fact that the financial disparity between the players of the two clubs was a matter that was noticeable but said that it would only motivate his team further to beat the Rovers, he said “There is no doubt that they are getting paid more than us but that only makes us even more determined to beat them.”
