In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.
Friday’s papers in the UK discussed the upcoming round of fixtures in the premier league with Oldham taking on Everton and Sheffield United taking on Liverpool, Queen’s Park Rangers striker Les Ferdinand was racing against time to become fit for the clash against Tottenham and the remarkable story of Don Hutchison, 21 year old youngster and his rapid rise into Liverpool’s first team.
Oldham was set to take on Everton at home in what promised to be a high scoring affair. Oldham had conceded 19 goals in 11 matches so far that season along with netting 19 goals themselves. Their leading scorer was Graeme Sharp who was set to face his former club Everton and would go into the match in a rich vein of form after having scored four goals that season. Everton manager Howard Kendall had sold Sharp to Oldham as he wanted to replace him with Dean Saunders from Derby County who chose to go to the red side of Merseyside in a last-minute deal to take him to Liverpool. Since then, Saunders has been sold to Aston Villa in a deal worth £2.5 million.
Sheffield Wednesday had an impressive finish to the previous campaign finishing third in the table but results that season were disappointing with only two victories in the league till then. Injuries to key players like David Hirst & John Sheridan had hampered their progress whereas Liverpool was expecting some key players back to full fitness as well their midweek result in Europe.
Queens Park Rangers striker Les Ferdinand was racing against time to prove his fitness for the weekend clash against Tottenham Hotspur, he picked up a tendon injury during the goalless draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Initially, he was feared to be out for at least three weeks but now the chances of him being back in the squad to face Spurs were rated as 50-50.
Amongst a gloomy start to the season for Liverpool, a silver lining of hope was 21-year-old Gateshead born midfielder, Don Hutchison. Just three years ago he was driving a forklift truck in a timber yard. Now he found himself being central to Graeme Souness’s first-team plans. Just a week ago he scored his second goal for the season in European Cup.
