In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.
Thursday’s newspapers covered the news of Southampton star David Speedie facing a trial over assaulting a fan while playing for Blackburn, the race to grab England’s number one striker role set to heat up between Alan Shearer & Ian Wright, Vinnie Jones admitted being guilty at the “Hard Men” nasty video, Steve Nicol’s return to full fitness and the latest name to confirm their participation in the upcoming Bruce Grobbelaar’s testimonial match at Anfield.
Southampton player David Speedie was set to stand a trial on a charge of attacking a football fan at the end of last season; a court declared the previous day. The 32-year-old Scottish International player did not appear in front of Derby magistrates to face two charges against him, one of assault and the second of abusive behavior. Speedie had played for Liverpool in the past and was a Blackburn Rovers player at the time of this incident.
Premier League’s two in-form strikers, Alan Shearer of Blackburn Rovers and Ian Wright of Arsenal were going to be in the spotlight in the upcoming round of Premier League matches after it emerged that those two players were the prime contenders to take Gary Linekar’s then-vacant strikers’ roles with the Three Lions. Shearer had scored 11 goals until that point in the season whereas Wright had netted six times in the campaign.
Vinnie Jones admitted earlier that day that he was ashamed of the nasty video that had brought him in trouble with Football Association. The player pleaded the youngsters to not to be influenced by his comments with regards to “playing hard” which indicated to elbowing his opponents, cheating and resorting to violence during matches to gain an advantage. Jones was already charged by the FA of bringing the game into disrepute and now awaited the punishment to be handed out. Other players associated with the video like Manchester United manager’s son Darren Ferguson and ex-Chelsea star Ron Harris.
Liverpool’s under-pressure manager Graeme Souness was given an injury boost with the news that Steve Nicol was set to feature for the Reds’ reserves team later that night and was in contention to be fit to face Sheffield Wednesday later that week. The player had missed the previous three matches in the league all of which his side lost.
Many big names of the past years were set to feature in Bruce Grobbelaar‘s testimonial match in a week’s time at Anfield. The biggest of the name included Manchester United legend George Best. Former Leicester player Gordon Banks, Craig Johnson, Alan Hansen & John Wark also confirmed their participation in the match.
