Monday papers covered the only match played on the previous day where Sheffield Wednesday beat Tottenham Hotspur, Middlesborough manager Lennie Lawrence hailed Aston Villa as potential title winners after his side lost in their clash a couple of days ago, Nial Quinn was hoping to turn struggling Manchester City’s fortunes around by scoring against his former side Arsenal in their upcoming clash and Coventry striker Kevin Gallacher insisted that he was no cheat after being accused of diving from a tackle by Norwich City’s Chris Sutton.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Trevor Francis hailed Chris Waddle as a unique talent after the teenager put in an impressive performance that helped Wednesday beat Tottenham Hotspurs by two goals to nil. He said, “Some of his passes – you have to be there to believe them, He can pass the ball as nobody else can.”
Middlesborough manager Lennie Lawrence hailed Aston Villa as a team with true title-winning potential after his team lost out to Villa Ayresome Park. He also admitted that his team was outclassed by a much superior team and the score did not do justice to the final result and called on his players to pick themselves up and perform better if they wanted to avoid a thrashing against Manchester United who were their next opponents. He said after the game “Villa are going to be in the championship shake-up so a draw for us would have been a great result. But we never got anywhere near it in terms of performance. We have to do better. We mustn’t be fooled by the scoreline we were outclassed.”
Nial Quinn was hoping to turn his season around when Manchester city traveled to Highbury later that day to face Arsenal. Manchester City had been goal-shy that season and Nial Quinn had only scored once that season up till then which would make a goal against his former side, Gunners even sweeter. City, in fact, had failed to score in their previous three games, losing twice in the league and playing out a goalless draw against Bristol Rovers in the Coca Cola Cup.
Kevin Gallacher previous night insisted he was no cheat after being caught up in another one of football’s ‘diving’ incident. Coventry’s Scottish international striker incensed Norwich players as he went sprawling when challenged by Chris Sutton during the drawn leadership battle at Highfield Road. Sutton, clearly fearing a red card, pointed an accusing finger at Gallacher and then indicated to London referee Alf Buksh that the Scot had dived. Gallacher, however, insisted “I don’t know why he was trying to make me out to be a cheat. I felt my shirt being pulled. To me, it was a professional foul and I have seen people sent off for less. His challenge knocked me over.”
