In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.
Saturday’s papers covered the news of Liverpool’s famous Kop end of Anfield was all set to be converted into a seating section following Hillsborough tragedy, Norwich City facing injury crisis before ahead of their top of the table clash against Coventry City, Liverpool boss Graeme Souness was set to make wholesale changes to the line up to improve their form and Arsenal striker Ian Wright was cleared of any investigation following the coin throwing incident against Millwall.
Liverpool’s CEO Peter Robinson announced that the famous standing section of Anfield, The Kop was set to be converted into an all-seated section at an estimated cost of £3 million next year. The decision was taken on the basis of the recommendations made by the Taylor Report which was made in the wake of the Hillsborough tragedy. Mr Robinson said “The club doesn’t seem to have any choice in the matter, we are bound by the legislature that all Premier League grounds must abide by 1994. Everton seated their Gwladys Street end last season and Arsenal & Manchester United are also set to follow The Kop must be seated if we want to use that section. We understand the feeling amongst some supporters but really, we have no choice.”
Top of the table Norwich City was again set to be without their two most experienced players as they seek to extend their Premier League lead by beating then second place Coventry City at Highfield Road. An ankle injury kept out the skipper Ian Butterworth, while midfielder Gary Megson was sidelined by a strained hamstring.
Liverpool was set to make changes in their defensive personnel to arrest the crisis they were facing in the defensive department. Goalkeeper David James was set to be replaced by Bruce Grobbelaar whereas Steve McManaman was also likely to be back in the line up for their clash against Wimbledon at Anfield. Despite much criticism, Don Hutchinson was set to keep his place in the lineup. Liverpool went into the clash under pressure and on the back of one victory in their previous seven premier league games.
Arsenal striker Ian Wright was set to be let off by the premier league & FA bosses from a further investigation following the incident of a coin being thrown at the player against Milwall. He was fined last season by the FA for making V signs at Oldham fans and was now the centre of a fresh controversy after it was alleged that he provocated the Millwall crowd during the Cocacola cup clash which resulted in a coin being thrown on him which he described as a missile hitting the back of his head.
