In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.
Thursday’s papers covered the latest injury news at Everton as they went into the weekend’s clash against defending Champions Leeds United, Liverpool brought back Bruce Grobbelaar from the cold to help them out in their defensive frailties, Chelsea captain Andy Townsend defended teammate Robert Fleck over a barren goalscoring run and new dad Alan Shearer went into the weekend hoping to reach double-digit goals in the premier league this season.
Mo Johnson and Matthew Jackson were the latest additions to an Everton injury list that was reaching crisis proportions. Seven senior players were either on the treatment table or edging back from long term problems after previous night’s 1-0 Coca Cola Cup defeat at Rotherham. And the alarm bells were ringing once more for the desperately unlucky Ian Snodin, who was forced to pull out of last night’s Goodison Park reserve game against Wigan. Paul Rideout, Peter Beardsley, and Mark Ward are all on the treatment table already and Martin Keown had only just returned from a spell on the sidelines.

Bruce Grobbelaar had been called on to sort out Liverpool’s defensive problems against the team which had caused them the greatest headaches in previous seasons. The Zimbabwean, whose desire to regain his passport cost him his first-team place, would make his Premier League baptism at Anfield on Saturday against Wimbledon. Reds’ boss Graeme Souness had opted for experience instead of the younger talents of summer signing David James, hoping the popular African could help plug the gaps in a rearguard which has leaked eight goals in the last two matches.
Chelsea captain Andy Townsend spoke out in support of £2.1 million striker Robert Fleck. Townsend rallied behind Fleck, who had scored just once for the Londoners since his club-record move from Norwich just before the start of the season. The Scottish international forward again drew a blank as Chelsea beat Walsall 3-0 at a canter In the Coca-Cola Cup clash at the Bescot Stadium last night. But Townsend, a team-mate of Fleck in his Norwich days too, had no worries about Fleck’s bright future at Stamford Bridge. Townsend said: “Robert is a quality striker and the goals will come. Even when he is not scoring, though, he’s making things happen. He’s so quick and makes so many darting runs he is a handful for any defense. He laid on two of the goals against Walsall and when you’re winning it doesn’t matter who scores.
New Dad Alan Shearer was hoping to continue his good form going into the weekend clash against Oldham Athletic, he celebrated the birth of his first child by scoring a wonder goal which salvaged a 1-1 draw for Kenny Dalglish’s Blackburn Rovers against a battling Huddersfield in the Coca Cola Cup. He said, “I enjoy every goal but that was something special. I just let it fly when I saw the gap and it was beautiful to see it go in.” Alan Shearer will go into the weekend clash against Oldham as the highest goalscorer in the league at that point with nine goals in the first nine-game of the Premier League season.
