Saturday papers covered Dean Saunders playing against his old club Liverpool, Gary Mabbutt‘s showdown talks with Tottenham manager Doug Livermore after being left out of the squad for the clash against Manchester United, Blackburn target Craig Short turned down the opportunity to move the Ewood park and Middlesborough’s chase of Charlton Athletic man Robert Lee took a new twist

Liverpool captain Mark Wright was banking on his new partnership with Danish international Turben Piechnik to stop Dean Saunders from making a dramatic impact against his old side. Piechnik was set for his debut after only half a game for Liverpool’s reserves, the big center-half was under the spotlight against Aston Villa’s man with a mission Saunders. But while the Dane knew little about the Welsh international, Wright was all too aware of Saunder’s qualities, having played with him at Derby and Anfield. Wright said: “He never stops working and we know that he won’t give in until the final minute. That’s his biggest asset his work rate and getting into goal scoring positions. “That’s why we have got to be on our toes. We hope he’s not going to be one of those players who comes back and haunts us.”

Gary Mabbutt had a showdown meeting with boss Doug Livermore after being left out of the Spurs squad for the upcoming Manchester United clash at White Hart Lane. The 31-year-old club captain demanded to know why he was not in the 17-man squad, despite a crop of injuries. Livermore said: “Gary missed preseason training. He’s now getting back to fitness and it’s just a matter of time before he is available.”

Kenny Dalglish drew a blank in the transfer market when Notts County’s £2.5m rated defender Craig Short turned down the big bucks of Premier League Blackburn for the bottom of the First Division, Derby County. The reasons reported for the snub were not down to the pulling power of Blackburn Rovers or Kenny Dalglish but Short wanted to stay closer to the midlands and with his family and accepted a pay cut in order to stay at his current club Derby County then to move up north. Ex Liverpool star John Aldridge commented on the situation and said “He must be a genuine lad and it was good to see. I found myself in the same situation where Real (Sociedad) wanted me to stay but me and my family wanted to return to the Merseyside and there was no contest when that came into it, there is no place like home.”

There was late drama in the Robert Lee’s impending transfer to Middlesborough after the player asked for 36 hours to talk over the phone with his wife following several hours of talks with the Borough manager Lennie Lawrence on Thursday night. Lee was reported to be unhappy over having to relocate from his home down south in Romford to the North East of the country, Lawrence admitted that the deal was close to being agreed but the distance for relocating was proving to be a hurdle which he hoped will be resolved soon, he said “Money is no problem. We’ve agreed terms. But I knew that the biggest bridge to cross would be in convincing Lee that a move to the North-East was a good one for him. It will be his first-ever move away from home and it’s a big step. But I’m very confident that he will agree to join us. It’s a chance for him to further his career and play in the Premier League with an ambitious club.”
