Tony Cottee announced himself as the lead striker at the Goodison Park by scoring two goals against Blackburn Rovers and helped Toffees win a thrilling match 2-3, later on, he announced that he felt he was ready to be the lead striker at the club after months of injury frustration, he said after the match, “I feel I am the person to score the goals for Everton. A lot of the fans are behind me. I need the manager to pick me and then it’s up to me to do what I’m best at. If anyone doubted my ability, I proved a point last night. But I’m not getting too carried away. “I’ve done it before, coming back and scoring goals.” Everton manager Howard Kendall picked Cottee over Mo Johnson in the starting line up and after the performance last night Cottee would be the first name on the teamsheet for the upcoming match against Crystal Palace.

Chelsea was set to make a move for Sunderland keeper Tony Norman, the Blues manager Ian Porterfield had been scouting around the country with his heart set on replacing then-current keeper at the Stamford Bridge, Dave Beasant who had fallen out of favor following his multiple high profile mistakes in the previous few weeks. And he had decided that Welsh International keeper Norman was the correct man to resolve the goalkeeping crisis at the Bridge. Norman, however, was on the sidelines since dislocating his finger and had not played any competitive football since the first week of the Premier League that season and was set to be sidelined for another ten days.

Torben Piechnek was set for his move to Liverpool after him opting out of his side, FC Copenhagen’s UEFA Cup clash later that day but instead choosing to travel to the Merseyside to watch his potential new club Liverpool take on Apollo Limason at Anfield. Graeme Souness had been a strong admirer of the Danish center-back and despite interest from Nottingham Forest and Arsenal, it looked like that the Reds were set to get their man.
