Dalglish hoped to boost his spending beyond £2.5 million Craig Short from Notts County – and then take Rovers back to the top of the Premier League against Kendall’ Everton. Howard Kendall who cut his managerial teeth at the Ewood Park is desperate to avoid a hat-trick of defeats. Everton was talked about as title contenders with their five games unbeaten start but their hopes had come crashing down with losses to Spurs and Manchester United.  Strikers Paul Rideout and Tony Cottee were added to Everton’s squad for that night’s Premier League clash at Blackburn. Rideout had recovered from a shoulder injury and Cottee, who had not played in the first team that season, showed his sharpness with a couple of goals for the A team on previous Saturday.

Middlesborough manager Lennie Lawrence were ready to make new bid for Charlton Athletic striker Robert Lee that week. Lawrence already had two bids turned down, including once of worth £500000 earlier that week. Charlton team were holding out for £650000 and it was possible that Lawrence would increase his bid to match the asking price from the London based club. Boro needed another striker to complete their attack and Lawrence seemed set to get his man but he admitted that he had other options in mind as well if the deal for Lee was to breakdown.
