Monday papers covered Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over current Champions Leeds at the match played on Sunday, 6thSeptember at Old Trafford. Andrei Kanchelskis and Steve Bruce scored first goals of the season to seal victory of much greater significance to Manchester fans than the three points that advanced United into fourth place in the Premier League. Leeds never produced the penetration which brought a series of heavy away wins previous season, although their attack was blunted by the loss of Rod Wallace after only 15 minutes. Wallace damaged a hamstring and became out of contention for a first England cap in Spain that week. Jubilant Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson celebrated what he called ‘’the best league result of the season so far’’

In other big stories,Crystal Palace Chariman Ron Noades led a dramatic walk-out from a Premier League meeting in London today after a £13 million Bass Sponsorship deal had been blocked. Furious Noades stormed out of the meeting at a Lancaster Gate hotel when eight clubs voted against accepting the deal because they felt it might conflict their own sponsorships. Six other club representatives followed Noades’ lead. There we 14 votes in favour and eight against. Those who rejected the deal included Liverpool, Everton, QPR, Leeds, Arsenal, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa.

Finally in transfer updates, Deal Saunders was expected to complete his move to Aston Villa on Thursday and make his debut against champions Leeds after the international break. Liverpool’s Welsh striker was still waiting to learn if the Midlands club had agreed to match the Reds’ £2.3m valuation which would end his Anfield career after just 13 months. Liverpool called the deal off after Villa chairman Doug Ellis offered £20000 less than manager Ron Atkinson had originally bid but Big Ron believes the player will be in his side for Sunday’s televised clash at Elland Road. If Saunders looked like leaving Anfield then Birmingham City’s Paul Mardon could be arriving in a deal worth £1m. The Centre back who was deprived of a chance to train with the Reds previous season, was at Melwood to begin a four day spell.
